The practicum project aims to test and explore a novel industry-city strategy for the Vallejo industrial zone, situated in the northern part of Mexico City within the Azcapotzalco borough. Vallejo holds a central position in Mexico's industrial landscape. The project's specific objective is to introduce innovative planning approaches to industrial zones with the aim of reintegrating manufacturing, a concept termed "industrial remix." This novel approach to industrial remix is achievable through a three-fold strategy encompassing industrial urbanism, reconfigured manufacturing, and a closed-loop urban metabolism. This strategy is firmly grounded in the distinctive attributes of the area, leveraging its strengths in industry, environment, culture, and its resident population.
Objectives
- To comprehensively explore the potential of industrial areas in Mexico City, the project will examine both the regional context and site-specific considerations related to site planning, infrastructure, and ecological systems. Additionally, the project will formulate strategic goals and offer policy recommendations.
- To understand the industrial history of Mexico City and the resulting spatial outcomes from past policies and plans. With this knowledge, understand the spatial ramifications and dynamics of new manufacturing and the contemporary industrial economy. With the future of manufacturing in mind, help make recommendations for policy response systems to the city and foster responsible and resilient urban development that integrates industrial
- To conduct an interdisciplinary study that leverages different expertise that collectively contribute to a strategic plan that proposes sustainable design for the manufacturing and industrial areas of Vallejo.
- To bring new insights and technical expertise (site planning, energy) that can be utilized for the future industrial and creative economy in the city.
